Google Home Display talk has picked up right after a new era began in Google's smart home world with Google Home Speaker. As soon as that arrived, a natural question came forward, is a screen-carrying device coming next? This possible device even has a name being heard, "Google Home Display". This isn't just rumor either. Google Home's own head hinted at such a project before Speaker arrived, plus that name got caught once inside software code too. Meaning this thing is coming, only when plus how it looks stays that question now.
To get a sense of what this new device could be, looking back matters. Over this past decade Google built screen-carrying smart devices in three ways, each one holding something to learn from.
It began with Nest Hub, whose original name was Home Hub. A small screen-fitted speaker, priced at merely $99. Not something complex, rather a wonderfully simple companion for viewing photos in a corner of a room, listening to music, or casting video from another screen. Its simplicity was its strength.
Then came Nest Hub Max, which was actually a bigger version of that small device. A large screen, improved speaker, more smart home control, plus its biggest addition, a Nest Cam. Because of this camera that device became a center of everything from video calls to keeping an eye over a home. Word "hub" found its real meaning right here alongside its name.
Third attempt was Pixel Tablet, which wanted to build something between a smart display plus an ordinary Android tablet. That idea was appealing, at home it's a smart display, in hand a tablet. But stepping onto two boats, it couldn't become fully best at any single role. It handles every task fairly, yet isn't best at even one, this was its weakness.
From these three experiences one thing is clear. For a new Google Home Display, following that Nest Hub Max path seems most sensible. Because new Google Home Speaker already captured that small $99 Nest Hub's place. So as a next step in that lineup, a big, camera-carrying, full-fledged hub fits better. If that camera holds a feature like night vision, weaknesses of old Hub Max can be overcome too.
But biggest question maybe lies elsewhere, will Google build multiple devices, or stop at one? Current hints suggest, for now maybe Google Home Speaker plus one Google Home Display, these two will be main pillars of their smart home hardware. A logic sits behind this too. Third-party brands are now returning to Google's smart home system again. So Google building a few ideal devices itself, then leaving remaining varieties to other companies, would rather be a wise move.
In the end this whole matter stays at possibility stage. That Google Home Display is coming is nearly certain, but how it looks, what it can do, stays an open question. Google is rebuilding its smart home anew, plus this screen-carrying device could be that arranged home's next important piece.
