The Redmi Note 17 Pro battery promises to be one of the key features of the device. Before its release in China on July 14, Xiaomi has announced that it will be equipped with a 9,000mAh battery protected by a five-year warranty. To say it's an unusual move for a mid-range phone would be an understatement, but it does say a lot about what Xiaomi intends to do with this phone.

Here's what Xiaomi has already announced, as outlined in its promotional materials. Battery Guarantee covers only the battery. The Battery Guarantee only applies to the battery. Xiaomi's strategy can be broken down into two stages. Xiaomi will replace the battery free for life for the first four years if it drops the battery health below 80% of its original level. For the 5th year, the company will not replace the battery, but upgrade it to a higher capacity battery model.

Leaked images suggest the jump will be around 1,000mAh, which would result in a 10,000mAh battery by year 5. It's a pretty significant gesture, as most phone makers only offer one or two-year battery warranties at best.

This may only be available for a limited time, however, when the units are first sold. It's being hailed as the "First Sale Free Five-Year Battery Upgrade Guarantee," which means those who are buying the handset later might miss out.

Redmi Note 17 Pro Battery Capacity and Charging Specs

The phone boasts a big 9,000mAh battery. It implies Xiaomi believes the Note 17 Pro will be able to make it through the day whether it's playing some video games or streaming videos for hours without a midday recharge. The charging speed of the 67W is not the fastest in the market with some competitors claiming speeds of more than 100W.

There are software modifications available to ensure long-term battery health. There are software tweaks that can help keep batteries healthy for longer.

Having a large battery does not mean that every one of them will be healthy over the years of use. According to Xiaomi, HyperOS will receive optimisations that will help maintain performance stability throughout the phone's life. There are also some smarter ways of dealing with background apps, faster startups, and wear leveling around storage, which distributes read/write operations across the memory so that it doesn't degrade as quickly.

Such software enhancements are important because, without battery support, any battery warranty will be futile.

The screen is made of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and Xiaomi says that the phone passes a 3-meter drop test, which drops a metal ball from 3 meters on to the screen. The device has also picked up five-star drop resistance certification from testing agencies SGS and CQC.

In terms of water resistance, the phone has IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings, which means it's protected from light splashes to high-pressure water jets. It's also TÜV SÜD-certified and tested for underwater use up to 2m and for a continuous period of 72 hours. It's a pretty solid set of certifications for a midscale phone.

The Note 17 Pro will be available in a new "Sky Blue" color variant, and the light blue gradient finish is supposed to simulate the color of the morning sky and clouds.

The front of the display has a flat 1.5K OLED screen. Xiaomi claims its ability to reach 3,500 nits of brightness in direct light, which should be good for visibility outside. The Green Mountain Eye Protection system will allow the screen to be dimmed to 1 nit to minimize the amount of eye strain that is caused by low light conditions during nighttime viewing.

In addition to hardware, Xiaomi is also introducing safety features to the smartphone. It will identify potentially malicious calls that are likely to be scam attempts, and it also identifies calls with AI face swapping, or “deepfakes”. The features are part of a larger campaign by phone manufacturers to protect against more than physical damage, but digital scams as well.

This Battery Guarantee is for you if

When you've got a phone that you aren't buying new every year, this type of warranty is a lot more significant. This is a rare feature and it's a direct solution to one of the most common causes of battery-related phone slowdown as time goes on: a free battery upgrade at the 4 or 5-year mark.

However, if you change phones every year or two, the long-term warranty will be of minimal value to you. The key features such as 9,000mAh and 67W charging still appeal, but the multi-year protection plan is more of a long-term buy appeal.

More details regarding pricing and other specifications will be shared soon as Xiaomi will officially present the complete set of the Redmi Note 17 Pro lineup on July 14.
